Clyde Roy Mathews Jr.

Clyde Roy Mathews, born February 12, 1943, passed from this world to his heavenly home March 22,2025, at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol Jean Mathews, and 2 children, Penny Jean (Kerry) Iannazzo, Clyde “Kevin” (Michelle) Mathews; 5 grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth Withers, Victoria Lynn Mathews, John Wesley Withers, Valetta Leigh Mathews, Nathan Paul Withers. Sister, Louise Smith Sparks, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Dorothy Mathews, and one grandson Wesley Clyde Withers. Clyde was a 1962 graduate of Lakeview High School where he was a sports reporter for the school newspaper and a member of the Library and Tri-Hi-Y clubs. After graduation he worked at Miller Brothers in the security department, Manager for Browns Furniture Warehouse, and Combustion Engineering which became Alstrom Power. There he was a welder for 42 years and union steward. In 1964 he married his high school sweetheart, Carol Jean Heuser Mathews and together they raised, Penny and Kevin, who also graduated from Lakeview High. He served faithfully in his church as a deacon and usher for over 50 years. For the last 12 years he also served on the security team. He loved his Lord and served Him since the age of 9, a testimony he was always willing and glad to share with anyone. He loved sports and was a coach and pitcher for the church softball team both at Fort Oglethorpe First Baptist and Lakeview First Baptist. During his years playing for Lakeview First Baptist, he received the Sportsmanship award which to him, was the most valued. He was an avid fan of UGA football and UT, (as long as they weren’t playing UGA) and the Atlanta Braves. His hobbies were stain glass and gardening. With the glass he made yard art, birdfeeders, suncatchers and small windows. He loved gardening with his wife and friends of the Master Gardeners Hamilton County TN, where he received the Distinguished Service Award for his years of volunteering at community projects, Hamilton County Fair exhibits, Garden Expo and other events with MGHC. Clyde was always wanting to make others smile with a joke or a funny story and he usually had one for every occasion. The family will receive friends from 4-8pm Thursday, March 27 at the Wilson Funeral Home in Ringgold, Ga and from 10 ~ 12 p.m. on Friday, March 28th at the funeral home. Following the visitation on Friday, The Remembrance service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the Ringgold First Baptist Church, Ringgold, GA.
