Norman Douglas “Doug” Veazey

Norman Douglas “Doug” Veazey of Chickamauga, Georgia passed away  November 10, 2021.  Doug was born in Chattanooga Valley on January 3, 1937. He grew up in the Valley and attended Flintstone Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus as His personal savior. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1955 where he was an All-American in football and baseball and All-State in basketball. He captained the football team to a state championship in 1954.  He attended Georgia Tech on football and baseball scholarships where he was captain of their conference-championship baseball team in 1956 and 1957. After graduating from Tech, Doug worked in the construction industry, finishing his career as President and CEO of Rubber Polymer Corporation. Upon his retirement, Doug authored three books, Marching Through Georgia, By Dawn’s Early Light, and Living with a Shrunken Head. He was an avid Braves fan.

On June 8, 1958, he married his lovely bride, Mary Thompson Veazey, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. They were blessed with four children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Doug and Mary lived most of their married life in the Atlanta area. Upon moving to Chickamauga, they attended Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Judson and Mary Lee Veazey, and his oldest son, Michael Douglas Veazey.  His is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Mary, sister, Terri (Mike) Ellis of Chickamauga, son, Marcus (Susan) Veazey of Chickamauga, son, Matthew (Shannon) Veazey of Cumming, daughter Kristen (Trent) Phillips of Chickamauga, grandchildren, Kyle Veazey, Gabriel (Abbey) Veazey, Olivia (Tyler) Campbell, Mary Ellen Veazey, Jake Thomason, Taylor Thomason, and Troy Phillips, one great-grandchild, Elias Veazey.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 pm Thursday. A chapel service will be held at 4:00 on Friday. Family will receive friends beginning at 3:00 pm on Friday. Reverend Tom Kinman will officiate the service. Wilson & Sons Funeral Homes J. Avery Bryan Chapel will handle the arrangements.

    Mary, we are so very sorry for your loss but know that Doug is singing with the angels.
