Phillip “Phil” Tilley

Phillip “Phil” Tilley age 91 of LaFayette, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.  He was born to the late Alonzo Evans Tilley and Myrtle Jones Tilley in Soddy Daisy, TN. In early years he lived in East Ridge Tennessee and then moved to  LaFayette Georgia. He was of the Christian faith. After the 10th grade he hopped a train to Detroit and worked for Ford motor Company for 3 years. While working at Ford his best friend was killed in the Korean War so he returned home and joined the 2nd Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) of the US Army.  Phil began working at Dixie Yarns and in 1993 he retired after more than 33 years as a welder and shop foreman. Phil was an avid bowler and in 1971 won the ABC Southern Open. He also played Basketball and was an amateur boxer for the YMCA in the 1940’s. During the 1960’s he coached baseball teams at East Ridge Town Hall. Phil was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.  He is preceded in death by his loving wife Mildred Dooley Tilley, sisters Cassie Moore, Genieve Varner and Reba Selvidge and brother, Burch Tilley.  Phil is survived by his loving sons, Charles (Judy) Tilley of LaFayette, Ga and Larry (Barbara) Tilley of Ooltewah, Tn. Grandchildren Rachele (Josh) Watkins and Katie (Jonathan) Kinlaw both of LaFayette, great-grandchildren, Jackson (Madi) Watkins of Chattanooga, Tn, Joey, Hannah, and Tucker Watkins of LaFayette, and Thatcher and Harrison Kinlaw of LaFayette. Several nieces and nephews.  A private service will be held on October 4 which would have been their 67th wedding anniversary.  Online guest book at www.wilsonfuneralhome.com.  Arrangements by W. L.
