Mary Elizabeth Jones, 83, of Chickamauga, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 28, 2021. She was born in Bridgeport, AL on June 16, 1938, daughter of the late, James Sampley and Jenny Lee Weaver Sampley. She had lived in the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas for most of her life and was a member of Second Baptist Church in LaFayette. Mary worked as a professional photographer for more than 10 years, she also served as the first certified female deputy for the Walker County Sheriff’s office for 19 years and then as the information officer for the Georgia State Patrol before retiring in 2004. She went on to have successful careers with Wilson Funeral Homes and as a Real Estate agent for many years. She was a civic leader, serving her community in the Professional Woman’s Club, Civitan Club, and was the past President of the Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Sheriff’s Ladies Auxiliary. She was a panel member of the Tennessee-Georgia Realtors Association and took on leadership roles in Kids for Christ and Young at Heart and was a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed giving time to her community, spending time with her family and friends, playing Rook (where she was a skilled cheater) and living life to the fullest. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend that will be truly missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her husband, Sheriff Ralph H. Jones; daughter, Shannon George; siblings, James Sampley, George Bud Sampley, Charles Sampley, Jesse Sampley, Lois Haukenson and Frances Rector.
Survivors include her daughters, Patti & (Calvin) Norton, Sherri & (Scott) Priester; grandchildren, Jenny & (Jamie) Cochran, George Link, Aaren & (Stephen) Bruce, Nick Scott, Katherine Priester, Ashley & (Cole) Rose and Jessey & (Sage) Lemons-Link; great grandchildren, Penny Rose, Jack Rose and Kilby Bruce; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family & friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 11, 2021 in the LaFayette Chapel. Burial will be private.
