Helen Mae Wardlaw Hurley age 91, of LaFayette, GA passed away Tuesday – January 19, 2021. She was born in LaFayette, Georgia to the late Samuel Farris and Effie Rosella Stanfield Wardlaw. She was a resident of Walker County most of her life. She had lived a short time in Trion, GA and Fort Lauderdale, FL. She was a proud graduate of LaFayette High School – Class of 1947. She was a former member of The First Church of The Nazarene, where she had taught Sunday School. She sang in the Hurley family trio in area churches for several years. More recently, she had been attending Ridgeview Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and had also worked as a seamstress at Eli Whitney, Buster Brown and at the Hosiery Mill, and formerly worked at Roper Corporation. After retirement, she was always busy working in her garden, with her flowers, baking, sewing, quilting, playing with her grandchildren and keeping up with the daily weather forecast. Yet, still found time to volunteer at the Care Mission and visit the sick and elderly. Helen was very independent, she lived alone until a week before her death. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Buster Hurley, Jr., sisters: Betty Jay, Gertrude Israel, brothers: Albert Wardlaw, Samuel Farris Wardlaw, Jr., and J.D. Wardlaw, sisters-in-law: Helen, Margaret and Mary Wardlaw. She is survived by her daughters: Janice Mae Wrenn of LaFayette, GA, Lonna M. Hightower of Walker County, GA, Lisa Luanne Swanson of Calhoun, GA, brothers: Aaron Wardlaw of Chickamauga, GA, Charles (Shirley) Wardlaw of LaFayette, GA, fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm – Friday – January 22, 2021 graveside at Mount Carmel Methodist Church Cemetery – LaFayette, Georgia with T.L. Hightower and Minister: Jason McCarty. The family request face mask and social distancing be practiced at the service. Robert Cole, Ryan Cole, Rhett Cole, Jared Charles, Eric Bjerke and Dustin Downing will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Catherine Charles, Melanie Cole, Jessica Cole, Rachel Mabe, Rachel Banks, U.S. Army Sergeant 1st Class: Cody Hightower, Jeremy Hightower, Bryan Hightower and Joshua Bjerke. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the Care Mission at 105 North Chattanooga Street – LaFayette, Georgia 30728.
