Richard F. Jones, 93, of Fort Oglethorpe, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020. He was born in Orlando, Florida to the late Cecil & Edna Elizabeth Chase Jones, but had lived in the Chattanooga & North Georgia areas for most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He was a W.W. II Navy Veteran and served aboard the USS Franklin “Big Ben” when it was bombed by the Japanese for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He then went on to work as a Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes, where he was a crew member aboard the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald from 1958 – 1964. He retired from the City of Chattanooga, Recreation Department in 1991 after more than 18 years of service and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather that will be truly missed by all who knew him. He was also preceded in death by his son, Steve Wofford; brother, Ted Case and sister, Nell Case.
