Mr. John William Allen Jr.

Chief John William Allen, Jr., age 92, of Chickamauga, Georgia went home to be with The Lord Wednesday – January 9, 2019. John was born in Hamilton County, Tennessee to the late John William Allen, Sr., and Amye Iona Smith Allen. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. During his service he earned ten Battle Stars, served as Navy Gunners Mate and was honorably discharged as a 2nd Class Petty Officer. After serving his country, he worked for Colonial Bakery for over twenty years. He then served as Chief of Police for the City of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia for twenty-five years and was the oldest acting Police Chief for the State of Georgia. He served as Assistant Fire Chief and Animal Control Officer in Fort Oglethorpe and a volunteer at the Medal of Honor Museum in Chattanooga, TN. He was of the Baptist faith, a member of the VFW, American Legion Post # 3679, Peace Officers Association of Georgia and National Rifle Association. Sadly, we have lost another great American and World War II Navy veteran. Throughout life’s travel we encounter but a few men who stand above most others in character, dedication, loyalty and accomplishments. Such were the traits of the man, John W. Allen, Jr. John passed away surrounded by all his loved ones following the love of his life Joyce Floyd Allen on October 16, 2018. Joyce retired from Hutcheson Medical Center where she was a secretary for the head nurses. She also was a member of the League of Women Voters. Together John & Joyce volunteered many hours in the school system, recreation association and community. They were married for seventy-two years, which is so rare. Along with his parents and beloved wife Joyce, he is preceded in death by his great-grandson: Lane Vaughn Smith, brothers: Charles Allen, David Allen, Robert Louis Allen, Richard Eugene Allen. He is survived by his daughters: Tona (Harold) Bennett of Rock Spring, GA, Dawn (Henry) Saylors of Chickamauga, GA, son: John W. Allen III “Little John” of Florida, brother: Jeffrey Allen of Cleveland, TN, four granddaughters: Candice (Daniel) Burgan, Amye (Thomas) Smith, Windi Locke, April (David) Alexander, great-grandchildren: Dawson Locke, Will Smith, Madeline Burgan, Grayson Alexander, Ty Smith, Chandler Locke, Carson Alexander, great-great-grandson: Brantley Colt Locke, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services remembering, honoring and celebrating John & Joyce lives will be held at 2:00 p.m. – Thursday – January 24, 2019 at Chattanooga Veterans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations to be made to Wounded Warriors, Boys Town, Shriners Hospital and/or the Georgia Sheriffs Association.
